How Ayurvedic Knee Treatment Helped One of Our Clients Get Back on Her Feet

If you have been living with knee pain for a while, you will know how gradually it changes things. You stop doing certain activities. You think twice before taking the stairs. The gym starts to feel like something that belongs to a previous version of your life. One of our clients, Jyoti Kalsi, a writer based in Dubai, knew that feeling well. She had never considered knee joint treatment in Ayurveda before coming to us. After she did, she was walking comfortably, back at the gym, and moving without pain for the first time in a long while.

If any part of that sounds familiar, read on.

What She Came in with

Both knees were affected, though her left was where the pain was most persistent. She came in with three diagnosed conditions:

What the Treatment Involved

Following her initial consultation, the team at Ayur Vaidya built a personalised plan around four therapies, each chosen to address a specific part of what her knees needed.

Dhanyamaladhara

If your knees have been inflamed for a long time, you will understand why reducing that inflammation is the right place to start. Dhanyamaladhara involves a steady, warm pouring of fermented grain liquid over the affected joints, working to calm active inflammation and improve circulation in the surrounding tissue. It is gentle, but its effect on joints that have been irritated for months or years is meaningful.

Podikizhi

There is a particular kind of stiffness that comes with conditions like subchondral sclerosis, one that feels deep and unyielding rather than surface-level. Podikizhi works at that depth. Warm bundles of medicinal herbal powders are applied to the joint in a firm, rhythmic motion, driving therapeutic properties into the tissue and addressing the hardening and rigidity that makes movement so restricted.

Njavara Kizhi

When a joint has been degenerating for some time, reducing inflammation is only part of the work. The tissue needs to be rebuilt, and the joint needs to be nourished. Njavara Kizhi does exactly that. Warm boluses of medicinal rice cooked in herbal decoctions and milk are applied to the knee, working to restore lubrication, rebuild tissue, and strengthen the muscles and ligaments that support the joint. For anyone dealing with cartilage breakdown, this is a therapy worth understanding.

Janu Vasti

This is the most targeted of the four therapies and the one most specific to the knee. A small well of gram flour is formed around the joint and filled with warm medicated oil, which is held directly against the knee for a set period. The oil works into the cartilage, the joint cavity, and the surrounding tissue, lubricating and nourishing from the inside. For her left knee, where dryness and degeneration were most pronounced, this therapy made a particularly noticeable difference.

Treatment at a Glance

Therapy What It Targets What It Achieved
Dhanyamaladhara Inflammation and circulation Reduced swelling in both knees
Podikizhi Deep tissue stiffness and hardening Addressed rigidity from subchondral sclerosis
Njavara Kizhi Tissue repair, lubrication and joint strength Restored lubrication and supported recovery
Janu Vasti Cartilage and joint nourishment Direct, targeted relief for the left knee

The Outcome

By the end of her course of knee joint treatment in Ayurveda, the change was one she could feel in her daily life:

She had not imagined she would recommend Ayurveda to others. She does now, without hesitation, because the results were ones she experienced herself.

Could This Help You?

If you have been managing knee pain for a while and have started to wonder whether there is something that can actually address what is happening in the joint, knee joint treatment in Ayurveda is worth exploring. The conditions our client came in with, bursitis, subchondral sclerosis, and osteoarthritis, are among the most common knee presentations we see at Ayur Vaidya. And while every case is different, what her recovery shows is that Ayurvedic treatment can do more than manage symptoms. It can work on the joint itself, reducing degeneration, restoring lubrication, and rebuilding strength in a way that supports long-term health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ayurveda help with osteoarthritis?

Yes. In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is understood as Sandhivata, rooted in Vata imbalance and the accumulation of toxins in the joint. Therapies like Janu Vasti and Njavara Kizhi address both the inflammation and the underlying degeneration, not just the pain on the surface.

What if I have more than one condition affecting my knee?

Ayurveda builds treatment around the individual rather than a single diagnosis, which means a personalised plan can address several conditions at once. Our client came in with three distinct conditions and all were incorporated into her treatment.

How long does a course of treatment take?

It depends on the severity of your condition. Your practitioner at Ayur Vaidya will assess your situation during the initial consultation and recommend a realistic timeline tailored to you.

Can I return to exercise after treatment?

Many patients do. Our client returned to full gym activity and continues to exercise regularly. The therapies used in knee joint treatment in Ayurveda are designed to restore function and strength over time, not just reduce discomfort in the short term.

I have never tried Ayurveda before. Where do I start?

With a consultation. There is no obligation and no prior knowledge required. The team at Ayur Vaidya will take the time to understand your condition and recommend a plan that makes sense for you specifically.

What if other treatments have not worked for me?

Many of our patients come to us after other approaches have not delivered the relief they were looking for. Ayurveda addresses the root cause and the overall health of the joint rather than symptoms in isolation, which is often why it reaches places other treatments have not.
