Diseases of the Digestive System

In Ayurveda digestion and absorption of nutrition is explained in terms of “Agni” or digestive fire. Ayurveda considers Agni as a root cause for life, strength, health, nourishment, energy, and Prana (power of life). For optimal absorption of nutrients, food needs to be properly digested and this digestion happens only when the Agni is healthy.

Agni or digestive fire can be healthy only when the doshas of the body are in balance. Consequently, digestive disorders stem from low or imbalanced digestive fire leading to issues such as indigestion, poor absorption, chest burns, bloating and other digestive problems. Additionally digestive disorders also lead to accumulation of residue in the alimentary canal that may turn toxic to the body and generate diseases
