Broadly speaking headaches can be classified as tension headaches, sinus headaches and migraine. While tension headaches are mostly caused due to lifestyle issues, Sinus headaches are caused by changes in the pressure in the sinuses that can then cause headaches. Migraines on the other hand are neurological syndromes characterized by recurrent severe headaches, irritability, and nausea.
In Ayurveda, headaches are considered symptomatic of the vitiation of one or more of the doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha, with Vata typically being the primary dosha affected. The aggravation of Kapha dosha is considered to be the root cause for the development of sinusitis. Consequently, the kind of headache experienced is a function of the dosha involved. By extension the cause of discomfort arising from nervous tissue or bone structures helps define the treatment protocol.
Ayurveda has been proven to be highly effective in providing relief for headaches. The Ayurveda approach to treating headaches begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the patient and symptoms to understand the aggravation of each doshas and to take remedial measures to pacify them. The treatment method includes various combinations of herbal oils, massage and specially designed Panchakarma program like siro Abhyangam, Nasya, Snehapana, Lepanam, thalam, sirodhara and Virechana that purifies the body and pacifies the doshas. Along with treatment procedures dietary changes and lifestyle modification including Yoga are often recommended for lasting relief and recovery.
